Labor day weekend at the Allen Abode – work, fun, and furniture!
Looong weekends mean looots of things to do! It was tempting to spend 84 hours straight working on the house and finishing every project, but lately we've been challenging ourselves to balance work with fun. One night we asked each other, "Are we actually going to enjoy the house, or just keep working on it?" As soon as we finish a project we move on to the next, never stopping to enjoy the space. So now we're being proactive about putting social nights on the calendar and choosing to take breaks from all the housework. This labor day, we didn't labor all 84 hours; we had a good balance of getting stuff done and having some fun! Here is work and fun we had over the weekend:
Fun
Breakfast in bed before our new furniture arrived at 7:30am (on a Saturday!). Mike won great husband points for surprising Katrina who is usually the first one up at the Allen Abode!
Work
Cleaning up the living room and getting the new furniture arranged:
Friday
Sunday
Fun
Made lunch and watched an episode of 24 on the new couch!
Work
Hung all the cabinet doors in the kitchen - they've been off for 3 months.... way longer than we intended. It was easy to find things with no doors and now that we know where things are, we're excited about this change:
Friday
Sunday
Fun
Had company over to make sure the living room fits all our friends!
Work
Hung shelves and a fun mirror in our master bath:
Friday
Sunday
We also hung some items to organize our cleaning closet, created a mud nook out of some wasted stairwell space, mowed our terribly long lawn, and made some DIY art. Whew! It was a lot of work, but we had fun doing it all and didn't have a deadline for any of our projects so the pressure was off and we were able to enjoy the process of each project even if there were minor bumps along the way. We'll be posting in more detail about each project over the next few weeks, in the mean time check out our before and after page for some sneak peeks!
How was your labor day weekend? Did you labor, throw a party or combine the two for a balance like us?

I love the kitchen with the white cabinets, and I'm excited to sit on your new couches… all of them, one at a time. Wanna come over and help me decorate now…. my house could be your new project?

You sit on our couches, we'll decorate your house. Sound fair?

Hmph. This is what I am doing this labor day weekend 2012. Ugh. Funny, my kitchen cabinet doors have also not been on the cabinets for three months and of course longer than I intended as well!
Ugh. DFW, TX
